Central Valley General Hospital

Adventist Health is expanding its care for the Central Valley with the addition of Behavioral Health Services through Community Care in Hanford.

Licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Lorie DeCarvalho Ph.D., a board-certified expert in traumatic stress, created and developed the new program for Community Care—a service of Central Valley General Hospital, a nonprofit Adventist Health hospital. Dr. DeCarvalho, who is also a fellowship-trained pain-management specialist, has been seeing patients on an outpatient basis at her office inside the hospital.

“This is an exciting time for us,” says Dr. DeCarvalho, who moved to Hanford from Honolulu to become the Behavioral Health Services director for Community Care. “This region has a tremendous need for mental health services, and I’m so glad we can serve our communities this way.”

The Kings County region lags in the number of available psychologists, according to the 2004 “Health in the Heartland: The Crisis Continues” report by the Central California Policy Institute at California State University, Fresno. In 2001, Kings County had 4.6 psychologists per 100,000 people, compared with the state average of 40 per 100,000 people.

Patient visits are by physician referral only to DeCarvalho, whose office is inside Central Valley General Hospital at 1025 N. Douty St. in Hanford.

Community Care has locations in Caruthers, Coalinga, Corcoran, Dinuba, Fowler, Hanford, Huron, Kerman, Lemoore and Selma. Adventist Health is a not-for-profit organization with a mission of sharing God’s love by providing physical, mental and spiritual healing.
